What is zinc sulphate heptahydrate?

Zinc Sulphate Heptahydrate is zinc sulphate with seven molecules of water of crystallisation: ZnSO4·7H2O, molecular weight 287.54 g/mol. Zinc makes up 22.74% of it by weight, calculated from that molecular weight.

It is an odourless, white crystalline powder or colourless crystals with an astringent taste. It is very soluble in water, about 1 g in 0.6 mL, and practically insoluble in alcohol. In dry air it slowly loses water (it is efflorescent).

The USP has a single Zinc Sulfate monograph covering both hydrates. For the heptahydrate it requires an assay of 99.0–108.7% ZnSO4·7H2O and limits lead to 20 ppm and arsenic to 14 ppm, and the label must state which hydrate it is and, for oral and injectable preparations, the elemental zinc content.

Specifications follow the current edition

These limits are summarised from the USP 35 text for illustration; impurity limits have since moved to the elemental impurities chapters. Supply is tested to the current edition of the grade you order. Ask us for the specification and certificate of analysis for your grade.

What is zinc sulphate heptahydrate used for?

  • Childhood diarrhoea: the WHO and UNICEF recommend zinc alongside low-osmolarity oral rehydration salts, and zinc sulphate 20 mg dispersible tablets are on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
  • Pharmaceuticals and supplements: tablets, capsules and syrups for zinc deficiency.
  • Food fortification: a zinc source for fortified flour and cereal products.
  • Nutritional premixes and nutraceuticals.
  • Animal feed: a zinc source for all animal species.
  • Agriculture: a zinc micronutrient fertiliser for zinc-deficient soils.

Heptahydrate vs monohydrate: which form to choose

Both are the same zinc salt with different amounts of water. Agarwal Life Sciences manufactures both.

The monohydrate carries about 1.6 times as much zinc per kilogram, which usually makes it the more economical form where zinc is bought by content.

Regulatory status and HS code

  • United States: zinc sulphate is GRAS under 21 CFR 182.8997 when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice.
  • European Union, food: a permitted form of zinc for adding to foods under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 and for food supplements under Directive 2002/46/EC.
  • European Union, feed: zinc sulphate is authorised as a trace-element feed additive for all animal species under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/1095.
  • India: zinc sulphate is the zinc source named in FSSAI's fortification regulations for atta and maida (10–15 mg zinc per kg) and for cereal products and bakery wares.
  • HS code: 2833.29, other sulphates. Confirm the national tariff line with your customs agent.

Check the rules in your market

Regulations, feed maximum levels and permitted food uses differ by country and change over time. Confirm the requirements for your product with your regulatory team, and ask us which documents are available for your grade.

Packing, storage and handling

Agarwal Life Sciences packs Zinc Sulphate Heptahydrate in 25 kg paper bags with a liner, or in 50 kg HDPE drums.

Store it in tight containers in a cool place, as the crystals lose water in dry air. Zinc sulphate is harmful if swallowed, can cause serious eye damage and is very toxic to aquatic life, so wear eye protection, avoid release to drains, and follow the safety data sheet.

Why source zinc sulphate from Agarwal Life Sciences

  • Heptahydrate and monohydrate from one manufacturer, alongside our iron salts.

Frequently asked questions

How much zinc is in zinc sulphate heptahydrate?

About 22.7% elemental zinc by weight, calculated from its molecular weight of 287.54 g/mol. So 100 mg supplies about 22.7 mg of zinc, and about 88 mg supplies 20 mg.

What is the CAS number of zinc sulphate heptahydrate?

The CAS number is 7446-20-0. The monohydrate is 7446-19-7 and anhydrous zinc sulphate is 7733-02-0.

What is the difference between zinc sulphate heptahydrate and monohydrate?

The heptahydrate carries seven molecules of water and about 22.7% zinc; the monohydrate carries one and about 36.4% zinc. The heptahydrate dissolves readily for liquids; the monohydrate is more concentrated and stable for dry premixes and feed.

Is zinc sulphate used to treat diarrhoea?

Yes. The WHO and UNICEF recommend zinc alongside oral rehydration salts for children with diarrhoea, typically 20 mg a day for 10–14 days (10 mg for infants under six months), and zinc sulphate dispersible tablets are on the WHO Essential Medicines List.

Is zinc sulphate approved for food?

Yes. It is GRAS in the US under 21 CFR 182.8997, a permitted zinc form for fortified foods and supplements in the EU, and the zinc source named in FSSAI fortification regulations in India.

Why does zinc sulphate heptahydrate cake or change weight?

The heptahydrate is efflorescent: in dry air it loses some of its water of crystallisation. Keep it in tight containers to hold its composition.

What is the HS code for zinc sulphate?

Zinc sulphate falls under HS 2833.29, other sulphates; the former subheading 2833.26 was merged into it in 2007. Confirm the national tariff line with your customs agent.

Is zinc sulphate hazardous?

It is harmful if swallowed, can cause serious eye damage and is very toxic to aquatic life. Handle it with eye protection and dust control, following the safety data sheet.

What packing is zinc sulphate heptahydrate supplied in?

25 kg paper bags with a liner, or 50 kg HDPE drums.
